Meet and greet sunday smoke kit... interviews & biography coming soon... in the meantime, check out our exclusive Q & A with SSK head-guy Scott Meiggs
By Larry Leimhelm
So how did you get around to forming the smoke kit?
I guess it was inevitable in one way, and from there it just sort of gradually
came together. I could say forming smoke kit was always in the plan,
but it was never about a bunch of people sitting around a table and saying
"we should start another band and once again re-define music." Things
just don't happen like that and work out, and thats a good thing, because
we'd spend all our time thinking about making music, rather than playing
it.
What are your major influences in the music? And what sort of stuff are you listening to right now?
Well as far as influences its hard to really say. I can tell you what i like
and what i'm going for in a song, but its hard to really narrow that down
into what is influencing the music i write. Right now i've been listening
to a lot of Byrds, Bowie, Beatles, Beach Boys, Hayden, and the new Slayer.
Did you ever expect this band to get so popular among the indie scene?
You always have to hope for the best, but expect the worst. So,
in that way I always thought it was possible, but as someone who is skeptical
of the mainstream rock world, I knew there was a good chance that smoke kit
would just get passed over in favor of some other band with good looking
people who play status quo music. I mean its not hard to see that's how it
goes when your in the entertainment business. We'll open that can of worms
for later.
As a songwriter, do you concentrate on a straight meaning to your songs, or do you prefer other people to interpret the meaning?
All the songs are about something that has some meaning to me. People as
listeners are free to interpret the songs as they will. However, it would
be a rare occasion where someone could understand what any of my songs are
about if they hadn't been part of the original situation. The lyrics are
often broken down into what seems to be non-seculars, but in reality thats
not true; they just aren't presented in a linear fashion.
If you can remember, what was your first attempt at writing a song?
1991, it was called "slipping on motor oil."
We hear you were also in the now legendary outfit REV9. How does the Smoke Kit compare to the ranks of that band?
Rev9 had a certain rawness about it, that sunday smoke kit doesn't contain.
Sunday Smoke Kit is more polished in some ways.
We've seen your music/songwriting progress through the years. Where do you plan on taking Kit musically?
I'm hoping to get SSK out on the road when I get back from Europe. We're
also planning on recording another album in the studio.
Paper Flowers/Xavier Pelleuf are other projects you have been involved with. Do you plan on exploring that aspect of your musical career further, or do you plan on concentrating on the SSK songs?
I hear that question a lot and the answer is "yes" I'm going to explore the
Pelleuf and Paper Flowers stuff more. Life is nothing but time and so its
all around us, every minute. I love when people tell me they didn't have
time for something, they were too busy. I mean you might be that busy on
your wedding day, but in daily life I think most of us have a lot more free
time than we realize. I'd be rich, if I had a dime every time someone told
me they didn't get something done, because they didn't have enough time or
that they were busy. When in fact, you know good and well that they were
in their room watching TV or beating it in front of the computer. Anyway,
point being ...There's no reason why that the Pelleuf/ Paper Flowers stuff
has to fall to the wayside just because smoke kit seems to be whats happening
at the moment. I'm always writing songs and i'm always recording them so
its all good.
Technically compared to the other bands you have been involved with, how does this new band compare?
I've seen better and I've seen worse. There's things that could be improved
on. I guess there always are.
What are your plans for the near future?
Hopefully, take over the pop/rock world and live the chilled life. I'll need
a yacht though, thats definetly part of the plan. Oh, and a goddess of some
sorts.
