PSR NEWS BRIEFS

LINDA DRAPER's sixth studio LP continues to get more critical acclaim...here are the latest:

" the music and voice take center stage, simple and direct... Draper is all about substance...genius..." - ROCK AND REPRISE

"...stands head and shoulders above what I considered “folk” these days... BRIDGE AND TUNNEL is the best record yet..." - DAGGER (June 6, 2009)

And here's the full review from THE BIG TAKEOVER:

It would be easy to fly the folk flag over singer/songwriter LINDA DRAPER‘s music. But that would belie her associations with such outsider artists as KRAMER or stage-mates like REGINA SPEKTOR and KIMYA DAWSON. Her quiet meditations on life in the 21st century may involve more acoustic guitars than electronic geegaws, but this ain’t JOAN BAEZ or even CHRISTINE LAVIN. Draper’s songs push her thoughts and feelings outside arbitrary comfort zones, while she and producer BRAD ALBETTA add just the right touches of organ or drums to keep things interesting without distraction. All of which is merely a fancy way of saying that “Broken Eggshell,” “Pushing Up the Day” and the title track are difficult to resist. Kudos also to the overdubbed a cappella take on the ROLLING STONES‘ “Mother’s Little Helper,” a choice that says a lot about Draper’s tastes and attitude. - Mike Tolbert

Also a review of Bridge and Tunnel will be published July 16th at Feminist Review (http://www.feministreview.org/)

A.M. SUNDAY SMOKE KIT - with the recent activity of the band and Scott's continued work on PARASITES AND SYCOPHANTS, we've decided to add the classic track "Passing Shooting Stars" to the media page for your downloading pleasure.

MP3: SUNDAY SMOKE KIT "Passing Shooting Stars"

"Passing Shooting Stars" was originally recorded as new material for Scott's Xavier Pelleuf project. However, with Sunday Smoke Kit in full swing with a new line-up: Scott Meiggs (Vocals, Guitar), Neil DelParto (Drums), Mark Renfro (Bass), and Dan Villanueva (Lead Guitar), the band quickly issued "Passing Shooting Stars" along with two other newly recorded Meiggs' solo cuts and classic SSK tracks: "Los Alamos," "Strange Girl," and "I Know Someone Will." It remains one of the bands consistent releases and received critical acclaim via Dagger, All Music Guide, and Indie Spinzone to name a few.

You can read SUPER DAVE CROMWELL'S Blog write up of Linda's 5/21/09 NYC CD Release show - complete with photos and set list: http://davecromwellwrites.blogspot.com/2009/05/linda-draper-live-googies-loungethe.html - which included a trio of new songs written by Linda + The classic Odetta tribute track "Sail Away Ladies".

"Bridge And Tunnel" continues more critical praise from the press - read the latest:

"The latest from this singer-songwriter might be her best yet. For the unfamiliar, Draper has a sure sense of melody, but what I like best is her solid rhythmic grounding. Often this comes out in her acoustic guitar, but she never forces a lyric into unwilling music. Another exceptional effort." - AIDING & ABETTING (#308 June 2009)

Also in celebration of Linda's 2009 TOUR we've got a cool FREE MP3!!! Check out Linda Draper's rare performance of Crowded House's "Don't Dream (It's Over)" live at The Rockwood Music Hall, April, 2007

Sunday Smoke Kit...Past and Present...and P&S

Sunday Smoke Kit - one of Planting Seeds Records' original artists - have been an ongoing project from founding PSR guy Scott Meiggs. The band released several LPs in the late 90s/early 2000's - it also featured a couple of line-ups since the 1999-2001 steady live unit of Scott Meiggs (Vocals, Guitar), Neil DelParto (Drums), William Hickey (Bass), Dan Villanueva (Guitar, Vocals), and later Mark Renfro (Bass). Scott continues to record new music as Sunday Smoke Kit - while most of his time in the last few years has been dedicated to writing/traveling for the ultra cool/popular music blog PARASITES & SYCOPHANTS. We've recently unearthed some Sunday Smoke Kit tracks - here are a trio for your downloading pleasure:

MP3:: Sunday Smoke Kit "The Hardest Things Are Often The Simplest To Unwind (Live)"
MP3:: Sunday Smoke Kit "Purple Sage And Golden Bonsai (Live)"

These two tracks were recorded live in Norfolk, VA on 9/14/01 @ Cogans Instant Art via mini disc source (thus the bootleg like quality) - and was usually played in a bit of a medley arrangement but showcases the band's soft acoustic/jangle approach - Scott Meiggs (Vocals, Acoustic Guitar); Neil DelParto (Drums); Mark Renfro (Bass); Dan Villianueva (Lead Guitar)

MP3:: Sunday Smoke Kit "Woman"

"Woman" was recorded in Virginia Beach, VA in 2008. Presented here live in studio - a rehearsal take with scratch/guide vocals - which breaks down at the tracks close - It does capture the more recent line-up of the band and showcases it's more barn burner-country rock sound. Scott Meiggs (Vocals, Guitar); Dave Moore (Lead Guitar, Vocals); Corey Potrafka (Bass); Tristan (Drums).

A.M. VIBE - is set to rock out at the 2009 Art Around Adams festival in San Diego, CA on 6/6/09 at 3PM - check out the band's myspace for more info. Also - "Capricorno", the band's latest continues to get rave reviews...read the latest:

"This San Diego band has been around for a while now and includes former Red Dye No. 5 vocalist, Lisah Nicholson (who also added guest vocals to a Honeyrider song or two back in the day). I remember hearing a previous record by them but not liking it as much as I like CAPRICORNO. This is driving, catchy dream pop that wavers between upbeat n’ catchy indie pop like Velocity Girl and moodier, shoegazier tracks “Don’t Wanna Stay” and “Lullabye.” I prefer the former but the band excels at both. Then, towards the end of the record they toss in some lovely acoustic tracks, “Black Dogs” and “Sea Song” (both of which are in the Juliana Hatfield vein) Really glad to see that Nicholson and her cronies have carried on as this is a band that definitely needs more attention than they are getting." - DAGGER (June, 2009)

THE LOVETONES' "Dimensions" rolls along with more critical praise:

"With its gently ebbing melodies, Dimensions is a polished pop record layered with lulling psychedelic and country elements. The fourth album by the Lovetones shows the Australian group in solid form, offering graceful ballads, including "When it Comes" and "Look at the Waves," along with cascading pop tunes such as "Journeyman" and "A New Low in Getting High," a track co-written with Brian Jonestown Massacre's Anton Newcombe. The Lovetones front-man Matthew J. Tow is also a former member of BJM and the two bands share a few similarities but Dimensions is a much more restrained affair, sounding closer to the Byrds. On "There is No Sound," the group move with a melancholic starkness that recalls another '60s act: Simon and Garfunkel. While there are many backwards-looking musical moments on Dimensions, the high quality of the Lovetones' songwriting pushes the record decidedly forward, making for an engaging listen." - ROB RAY (EXCLAIM MAGAZINE, Canada)

Linda Draper: 2009 So Far

Linda Draper nears the release of "Bridge And Tunnel" - due out Spring (April 2009). She played her first show of the year to a packed house at NYC's The Living Room (Upstairs) on January 2nd along with bassist Rob Woodcock. The duo are set to hit the road early summer in support of the LP - which will include dates on the West Coast.

Linda has also returned to the studio to record a track to be included on an upcoming tribute to the late influential folk singer Odetta - the release will be in conjunction with UK magazine Wears The Trousers with rumored appearances from Marissa Nadler, Pepi Ginsberg, Sandy Dillon, Mara Carlyle and a slew of others. Draper and bassist Rob Woodcock recorded the traditional track "Sail Away Lady" with producer Major Matt Mason (who also co-produced Linda's 2007 LP "Keepsake"). "Sail" was made popular in the 50's & 60's by Odetta - she re-recorded the song in 2001 with The Byrds' Roger McGuinn on his "Treasures From The Folk Den" LP. The Odetta tribute will be a benefit to help others with heart and pulmonary diseases - look for a February/March launch.
