Sunday Smoke Kit
Singer/songwriter Scott Meiggs formed what became known as Sunday Smoke Kit in 1995. Along with the only constant member Neil DelParto (Drums) the band explored many of their musical influences: The Velvet Underground, The Byrds, John Denver, and The Jesus & Mary Chain among others. The band debuted on record with 1998’s “The Hardest Things Are Often The Simplest To Unwind” on their newly formed Planting Seeds Records. The LP showcases a wide variety of Mid-Fidelity styles accented by Meiggs’ fuzz guitar, which would become the bands trademark sound for their next two LP’s - 1999’s critically acclaimed “Summer Dress” and 2000’s “Uncertain Smiles.”
William Hickey (ex Rev 9, Buckeye Mower, founding Planting Seeds Records member) would later take over much of the Bass playing duties on assorted tracks on “Uncertain Smiles” and would be the bands live bass player for their lone 1999 performance in Norfolk, VA. The live line-up that night would include Scott Meiggs (Vocals, Guitars) Neil DelParto (Drums), William Hickey (Bass) and Astropop 3 leader Dan Villanuva (lead Guitar). This line-up would later morph into the most recent Sunday Smoke Kit incarnation, which would find Planting Seeds member Mark Renfro assuming the bass duties vacated by William Hickey. In 2001 the band released the much praised CDEP “Passing Shooting Stars,” which showcased a softer side of the band, where Nick Drake, The Red House Painters, Mojave 3 became more prominent influences. “I Love The Rain” CDEP, released in 2003 continued the band’s acoustic showing. The question has been asked many times over…Is there more left for the Sunday Smoke Kit? As long as nostalgia is king, there is always that chance.
